Is LingViet really free right now?
Yes — everything is free during early access. When we launch the Pro plan (at around $7/month), existing users will be notified first and offered a discounted rate. You won't be charged without your consent.
How is this different from Duolingo or Pimsleur?
Duolingo uses pre-written, gamified drills. Pimsleur is audio-only and expensive. LingViet generates a completely fresh reading passage, listening dialogue, and writing exercise for every session using AI — so you're always encountering new vocabulary in natural contexts, never repeating the same lesson.
Why Southern Vietnamese specifically?
Most language apps and textbooks default to the Northern (Hanoi) dialect. But the Southern dialect (giọng Nam) is spoken by the majority of the Vietnamese diaspora worldwide and by tens of millions in Ho Chi Minh City and the surrounding provinces. If you're connecting with family, traveling to southern Vietnam, or growing up in a Vietnamese-American household, this is the dialect you actually need.
What level of Vietnamese do I need to start?
LingViet works best if you already have some exposure to Vietnamese — familiarity with the alphabet and basic tones goes a long way. Beginner is aimed at learners who know a little Vietnamese and want to build up steadily with shorter, simpler content. Intermediate is for those ready for longer passages and more demanding grammar.
How does the AI-generated content work?
Each session uses Claude (Anthropic's AI model) to generate a unique reading passage, a Southern Vietnamese dialogue with audio, and a set of fill-in-the-blank writing exercises — all tailored to your level. No two sessions are identical.
Will my progress be saved if I close the app?
Yes. Your session history, vocabulary deck, daily streak, and XP are all saved to your account. Mid-session progress (your answers) is also saved locally so you can resume where you left off if something interrupts you.
